The Four Contemplations of the Semde

"In general Dzogchen isn't considered to be a method of the mind but of rigpa, instant presence... The way of the mind uses reasoning while the method of Dzogchen is to go directly, from the beginning, to the state of presence. Thus in Semde the word sem, mind, doesn't refer to ordinary mind but to an abbreviation of the Tibetan expression changchubsem (in Sanskritbodhichitta) which indicates our real condition, also called primordial state. To attain the knowledge of this condition one uses the Semde methods."

There is a large corpus of texts teaching Dzogchen included in the Nyingma atiyoga division of the tantras which is subdivided into three groups: the mental class (sems-sde), the spatial category (klong-sde), and the instructional class (man-ngag-gi sde). Aspects of Dzogchen were transmitted to Tibet by Padmasambhava and Vimalamitra and later systematized by Longchenpa and then condensed by Jigmé Lingpa.
